MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND ARRIVE ON TIME
Arriving unannounced is usually not
appreciated by most landlords. You want to be sure you get to see the property if you go
to the trouble to get there. Landlords want to rent to persons who look responsible and
who would make good tenants. Proper attire can make a difference when there are several
applicants applying for the same property.
If you find a place that you like, be
prepared to leave a deposit to hold it. Landlords often ask for a holding deposit. MAKE SURE YOU GET A RECEIPT FOR THE DEPOSIT!!!! The receipt should specify whether the deposit is refundable should you
decide not to rent the space, or how the deposit will be used if you do.
Give yourself time! At least two weeks
are recommended when looking for housing. Remember that students often have odd lease
terms running one or two semesters. The end of March to mid-August is the prime time to
look for fall occupancy. Landlords who usually rent to students may be unwilling to have
you sign a lease in advance. |
